Surface Finishing

Hot Foil Stamping

Heat-pressed metallic foil that adds premium gold, silver and holographic details to packaging.

What it is

Hot foil stamping presses a heated die onto foil film, transferring a metallic or pigmented layer onto the surface. It delivers sharp, reflective accents for logos, borders and fine text, and is a signature finish for luxury packaging. ZKPACKS supports hot foil on cartons, rigid boxes, tags and cards in gold, silver, copper, holographic and colored foils.

How it looks

Bright, mirror-like metallic detail with crisp edges.

How it feels

Foil areas are smooth and reflective; combined with embossing they gain a raised edge.

Suitable materials

  • SBS paperboard
  • Art paper
  • Matte laminated board
  • Soft touch board
  • Rigid box wrap paper

Suitable packaging types

  • Rigid gift boxes
  • Cosmetic packaging
  • Folding cartons
  • Hang tags
  • Paper cards

Recommended combinations

  • Hot foil stamping with embossing
  • Hot foil stamping on soft touch lamination
  • Hot foil stamping with spot UV

Artwork requirements

  • Foil artwork in a separate solid vector layer
  • Minimum stroke and gap sizes respected for the foil type
  • Clear indication of foil color and finish
  • Coordination with emboss and lamination zones

Limitations

  • — Each foil color and position adds setup cost
  • — Large solid foil areas can be more expensive and need careful registration
  • — Foil over textured or rough surfaces reduces sharpness

Production risks

  • — Foil flaking or poor adhesion on coated or laminated surfaces
  • — Misregistration between the foil die and the print
  • — Bridging or voids in very fine foil detail

Sustainability considerations

Foil stamping adds a thin metallic layer, so recyclability is subject to material specification, local collection infrastructure and the foil coverage applied.
